HP iPAQ Glisten hands-on review

Hewlett-Packard and AT&T have announced iPAQ Glisten powered by Windows Mobile 6.5. It has a QWERTY keyboard and 2.5-inch display. The display is AMOLED touchscreen which adds more functionality for its users in addition to the keyboard. Glisten is positioned on the market as a business phone and has all the needed office software preinstalled.

Powered by 528 MHz processor and backed up by 256 RAM this device works pretty fast. It also features Wi-Fi module and an A-GPS, can work in 2G/3G networks and provides good internet speed with AT&T 3G. As for multimedia - Glisten has a 3.5 mm audio out which sound pretty cool (tired of those 2.5 mm ones). The only surprising thing is that ear buds don't come in the package. Who needs them anyway? You could buy some better ones than they would give for free.

As for appearance, the phone looks nice (personally) however today's top hit is glossy plastic and dark black colors which Glisten lacks, although soft touch rear is very welcome. Opening the package you will find the phone itself, micro-USB cable, battery and a USB wall charger. What surprised me the most is the weight of the phone, it is very light. Light weight doesn't make it a bad phone but it feels more like premium segment communicator when it weighs more than that. It's only an illusion.

Keyboard is fine: the buttons feel good, have good size, and provide some nice clicks when you press them. The D-pad is a bit small though and not comfortable for someone with big thumbs. The keyboard also has a special key for GPS, mail and some other service buttons.

Making the phone with both QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen display is somewhat useful but the users will lack screen space because of this. The menus and graphics lack quality because of the QVGA display resolution. It uses honeycomb menu which looks very funky, this brings some minor issues using the phone. All the menus are designed for finger use but screen size limits its usefulness.
